How does the topic rating system work?

Probably a really obvious question - I've started to notice percentage ratings next to certain topics. How does this system work - does the percentage increase when people who post in the thread are thanked?

Yeah, it seems to correspond to the amount of thanked posts each topic gains, probably something added to increase recognition and value for the posts and its author.

Thanks for your input on this - so it appears that the first thank bumps the percentage rating to 16.67, which as you suggest increases as/when further thanks are received (although whether this is only applied to individual posts or thanks to any posts in the topic are unclear to me at this point).
